Herd Management & Other Information

At Bluestem Acres we raise ADGA registered Nubian dairy goats under the herdname "Kansas Bluestem." We also have a second herdname for our daughter’s goats that are in her name, “Kitkats”. The Kansas Bluestem herd goal is quality home milkers, who can hold their own in a show ring if they must. 2021 was our first year on DHIR Milk Test and we had our first Linear Appraisal session in 2022. We learned how to AI in 2022 as well, but haven’t had much success yet. We set foot in the show ring for the first time in 2023, but didn’t travel far. Our youngest herdswoman, Kathryn, started her herd in 2023 with a single goat, Hopes and Dreams Tephra Glitter. Kathryn’s herd goals are success in the show ring, without sacrificing the dairy purpose and function.
Our breeding program is focused on creating the best goat. We want longevity in health and production, with conformationally correct animals. We've chosen to focus our bloodlines on those with high production records that don’t sacrifice udder quality, but you won’t see tons of champions in the Kansas Bluestem pedigrees, as we value DHIR and Linear Appraisal data over show wins. The CH and GCH will be present in the Kitkats pedigrees, though, as Kathryn strives to show competitively at the National level.
We think we're done purchasing adult does, but there could be a special gal that sneaks in one day. I'll never say we won't ever buy a doe kid, as there are several breeders who we love and if the right opportunity arose, we'd buy a kid from them without question. You’ll see us using a variety of bucks, both live and through AI. Thanks to a great local friend and mentor, we will occasionally use bucks residing in the Locust Creek Nubians herd, which is located a short 15 minute drive away. We look for boys who put a lot of meat on the bones of sons, while still throwing a feminine and dairy looking daughter. Our long-term goal is a dual purpose line with “heavy” boys and high producing ladies… we’ll see how long it takes us to get there.
