Kansas Bluestem Nubians

Nubian Herdsires-

Our live herdsires, both past and present, are featured on this page. Each herdsire has an introductory section, where you’ll find basic information including whether DNA is on file, known casein alleles and G6S status, a quick-look at his pedigree, and a few overview paragraphs. At this time we do not have any individual herdsire pages created. As we continue to freshen daughters from each herdsire, we will create pages for them showcasing progeny. Until that time, please contact us if you would like udder pictures of offspring. Unfortunately, we do not have udder pictures of dams, unless the buck carries the Kansas Bluestem herdname. All ADGA registration numbers are linked to view their pedigree on ADGA Genetics, provided courtesy of Gene Dershewitz & ADGA.

Occasionally we will utilize frozen genetics through artificial insemination. Those bucks are not featured on our webpage, but rest assured we’ve done diligent research on them before selecting them for use. If you’d like to see information on any of the AI sires we’re using each season, just ask!

Milking does are shown on the mature does page, in order of age. Dry yearlings and retained doe kids, are featured in order of age on the junior does page.

If you are interested in purchasing an animal from us please see our Breeding Plans page (available mature animals are listed at the bottom of the page in the For Sale section). To see information on some of the stock previously owned, with progeny carrying the Kansas Bluestem herdname, please see our Previous Stock page.

Apollo is a grow-out buck that we didn't intend to retain until he was born. From day one, he's been easy on the eyes and we can't complain at all about his dam's udder either. Astrid has long slender teats with large orifices, easy to milk by hand. Her udder is high and wide, and her pedigree is full of milky genetics. Apollo's sire is a heavy framed goat that still possesses dairy angularity and finesse, and we really appreciate Apollo’s paternal sister, Fantasy, because of those qualities. Kulani has a size and width we'd like to see repeated in Apollo's offspring. See more about Apollo on this page.

Food4Thought MardiGras Flasher

ADGA #N2287554

April 24, 2022

Flasher comes from the Food4Thought herd in Douglass, KS. We’d originally reserved a buck kid sired by him but that pairing didn’t produce any boys… so when his breeder offered him instead, we were very grateful for the opportunity.

Flasher’s sire line goes back to the 4RS herd, just like our Kansas Bluestem Ethel, and his dam line is Blissberry. His dam, Blissberry Mardi Gras has incredible strength of stature and her width along her topline is very impressive. I really think she could carry a dinner plate on her hips without any trouble. Mardi Gras has been shown several times as an aged doe and finished her championship in 2023. Flasher’s sire, Froth, is full brother to the gorgeous Food4Thought E’Clair. We’ve long admired E’Clair, and knowing she goes back to some of the same goats as Ethel just sweetened the deal.

Flasher has several young daughters in the Food4Thought herd show string. Food4Thought Chartreuse earned her restricted leg in June under Richard Grossman. (Fun Fact: Chartreuse is from the litter we had reserved a buckling from but her dam, Licorice, decided to produce only pink.) We hope to see kids of equal caliber from our does, beginning with his fall 2024 kid crop.

Ralph was an unplanned buck addition in 2023. We weren’t buck shopping but when we saw him advertised by his breeder, we knew his bloodlines would pair wonderfully with our herd. He combines two of our favorite herds- Camelot Cattle Co and Blissberry. His paternal graddam, Camelot Cattle Co Amara, is full sister to Camelot Cattle Co Mischief, a multi-time top ten breed leader doe. Amara has also milked really well and should hit the Top Ten list the next time ADGA publishes one. Amara appraised FS92 EEEE in 2024. Ralph’s dam, Blissberry New Jersey 6*M appraised FS86 (+VVV) as a yearling, milking over 1700lbs on her yearling lactation. New Jersey was also the 12th place milking yearling at the 2021 ADGA National show. His maternal granddam, SGCH Blissberry New Orleans 5*M, is two times 8th place in her class at ADGA Nationals but also boasts three lactations over 3000lbs and an appraisal score of FS91 (EEEE). We’re very excited to see how Ralph improves our udders and production.

Cozy Meadow Maximum Chrome

ADGA #N2382001

April 5, 2024

Chrome is a highly anticipated edition from a herd not too far away from us. We’ve been wanting to add more genetics from Cozy Meadow since Rocking Goat Farms LuckyClover finished her first lactation. Chrome is sired by Windsong Farm Maximum Honor, a son of SG +*B Linn Farms Magi’s Maxim. Maxim is a multi-time elite buck, coming in at the 97th percentile in 2023. Maximum Honor’s dam line is equally as impressive, going back to Crow’s Dairy Blue Sparkles (2014 & 2015 Top Ten doe) and Black Mesa Coriander (2008 Top Ten doe). Chrome’s maternal side has more Elite and Top Ten genetics, including Goddard Farm FSP Euphemia (2018 Top Ten doe), Goddard Farm Blushing Penny (2011, 2012, & 2015 Top Ten doe), and Linn Farms Magi’s Maxim appears again in his dam line. Chrome’s dam’s sire, Goddard Farm Sparkin Flint is 3/4ths brother to our doe, Goddard Farm Sphinx. In addition to being high producers, Chrome’s pedigree is packed with animals with high appraisal scores, with plenty of strength of stature who truly demonstrate the dual purpose of the Nubian breed. We expect Chrome to add milk and improve some areas of conformation in our herd.

Fudge was the first buck we purchased. He was bred and bottle raised by Jennifer Wilson of Zao Life Farms, Inman, KS. Unfortunately, we fed him some milk from a CAE+ doe we owned when he was a baby, and that made him CAE+ himself. He grew very quickly with great width and front end conformation, but his CAE+ status affected his ability to maintain muscle mass, and caused arthritis in his joints. He was also dangerously agressive during rut, to anyone or anything entering his pen that wasn’t a doe in heat. His personality prevented us from presenting him for appraisal. We put Fudge down in December of 2022, because of his dangerous behavior during rut, and his arthiritis.

His daughter, Ethel, earned her AR* as a milking yearling and achieved ELITE status on her second lactation (2022). We hope to continue to prove his genetics with the daughter we have retained in our herd. Even though he is no longer in our pastures, we hope his genetics stick around for several years.

P-Nut is one of the first bucks we ever purchased. His breeder does not show or milk test, but when we visited their farm, there wasn't a goat that didn't impress us, albeit, our “eye” was quite immature with regard to style and quality. The does are all excellent milkers and the personalities were great, even of the mature bucks, which is what we were hunting. As it turned out, P-Nut was CAE+, and that was very disappointing to us. We have always housed him alone or with Fudge, our other CAE+ buck. P-Nut’s CAE virus has affected his joints and comfort level. It has also affected his conformation and growth. We do not believe that his conformational deficiencies (that show as part of delayed growth & maturity) are genetic so we have continued to use him as a herdsire because P-Nut is AS1C N/N. At the time of his testing, P-Nut was the only purebred Nubian buck to test AS1C N/N. This means that his milk (should he have been a doe) would be low in milk protein, and thus more allergen friendly for those needing goat milk for allergy reasons. One of our herd goals is to produce allergen friendly goat milk, and P-Nut’s genetics will help us get there.

Amadeus is an AI-son of Kastdemur's Ain't He Amazin'. He is the first buck we “put money into” and hope that he rewards us with value in his daughters. Amadeus was bred by Jane Robinett, of Arkansas, and out of one of my favorite does of her herd, Robinett’s-Caprines Vista. Vista boasts a very tall, and upright stance with a level topline, perfectly plum teats and a nice wide mammary. Amadeus’s sire, Amazin' was a '12 and '13 Elite sire with a jam packed dam line, being the maternal brother to the well-known SGCH Kastdemur’s Temerity 5*M (2x ADGA Sr National Champion), son of SGCH Kastdemur’s Audacity 4*M (1x ADGA Jr Nat’l Champion), and grandson to GCH Kastdemur’s Aubree 3*M (1x ADGA Sr Nat’l Champion, 1x ADGA Res Nat’l Champion); plus his sire, King of the Hill, is the ‘08 ADGA National Premier Sire. Amazin’s daughters appraise and milk well, with the highest scoring being GCH Cobble’s Valley A Painted Lady (8-02 92 EEEE). We look forward to seeing how Amadeus carries the genetics of his sire and dam forward into our herd.

Amadeus’s yearling appraisal score is not the best. He was definitely in the gangly yearling phase. In the few short months after appraisal, he began to fill in his frame and grow into his shoulders. His two-year old score wasn’t an improvement, but he is still young. We also know that even the ugliest bucks can produce beautiful daughters with excellent udders. That’s what we’re really after anyway, beautiful daughters with excellent udders, and we think his pedigree is packed with what he needs to produce just that.

Player is another buck from Zao Life Farm in Inman, KS, but not related to our first herdsire, Fudge, in any way. Player is sired by FOUR. Four is a large and well conformed buck from the Jacob's Pride herd. His paternal graddam, Buttermaid, is described by her owner to have a capaciuos and productive udder, with a soft and supple texture that milks out completely. We hope to cross him onto some of our girls that have poor front end assemblies, and also make improvements in udder texture. He's almost as thick and wide as he is tall. His dam, Avalon, is a large girl with a well attached udder, but we really love his maternal granddam Anastacia. Anastacia appraised at VVEE 90 at nine years old, on her eighth lactation. It's our hope that Player brings that longevity into our herd.
